Back The resignation process

First of all, you must remember why you are leaving. The fact that you have got to this stage suggests that there is an underlying reason. If you are just about to hand in your resignation, then you should have already weighed up the pros and cons of a change of company and be comfortable with your decision. It is important to never make the decision to leave in the heat of the moment, as any decision of this kind of magnitude needs to be carefully thought through.

With this in mind, you ask yourself whether you are committed to leaving your current employer? The fear of the unknown will often hold people back from making this life changing decision. Many will ask themselves the question “what if it doesn’t work out?” However, if you have got to this stage where you are about to give your notice and you have taken the time to think it through, then it stands to reason that your current position is not offering the same opportunities as the position you are about to join.

On the flipside of this, if after working through your options, you have decided to stay within your current role, make sure you are staying for the right reasons too!

Often people will consider leaving, but will put off the decision to do so. By doing this, you are in fact making a decision; that being to stay in a job where you are not completely happy. A change of role can often kick start you on a stratospheric career path and if you don’t go for it, you’ll always be thinking “What if…?”.

When it comes to the actual resignation, it always best to keep it professional. Even if the reason you are leaving is because you hate your job, you hate your boss and you hate everything about the organisation you work for from top to bottom; it is best to rise above any desire to tell your boss this, after all, your employer took a chance on you and have been paying your wages. So when it comes to writing your resignation letter, it is best to keep it simple and reign in any negativity.

It is important to never burn your bridges by being unprofessional when resigning. You never know, you may not be the only person to move between the company you are currently working for and the company you are joining. If they are joining at a higher level than you, then any bad blood could cause you problems in the future!
